USOs: what is actually being reported
Unidentified submerged objects are the least examined corner of the UAP subject and the one most often reported badly. What the credible cases have in common, what the sea does to evidence, and which claims fall apart on contact.

A USO — unidentified submerged object — is a report of something anomalous in, entering or leaving water. It is the oldest strand of the UAP subject and by some distance the worst served, because the sea removes almost everything an investigator would want: no debris field, no landing trace, no photographs from the ground, and a medium that distorts every sensor pointed into it.
That difficulty cuts both ways. It makes genuine cases hard to substantiate, and it makes weak cases hard to kill. This section is built to keep those two problems apart.
What is actually being reported
Strip out the retellings and the reports fall into four groups, which are rarely distinguished and should be.
First, transmedium reports: an object observed to cross the air–water boundary without the deceleration that boundary should impose. The 2013 Aguadilla footage and the 2019 USS Omaha video are the modern examples, both recorded on military or federal sensors.
Second, submerged contacts: sonar returns behaving in ways operators cannot account for. These are the most common and the least conclusive, because sonar in shallow or thermally layered water produces false targets routinely.
Third, submerged structures: formations on the seabed proposed as artificial. Yonaguni, Bimini and the Baltic anomaly are the well-known cases, and they are geology questions, not UAP questions.
Fourth, the loss narratives: ships and aircraft that vanished, retrospectively gathered under a heading like the Bermuda Triangle. This group has been checked against the records and it does not survive the check.
What the sea does to evidence
Water is opaque to almost everything useful. Radar does not penetrate it. Optical sensors reach a few tens of metres in good conditions. Sonar works, but it works by inference — it measures returns, and the interpretation of those returns depends on temperature, salinity, depth and the operator’s expectations.
A layer where temperature changes sharply with depth will reflect sound, hide objects beneath it, and produce contacts that are not there. Vast shoals of small organisms form a layer dense enough to register as a seabed and rise at night. Every submariner knows this. Very little popular writing on USOs mentions it.
What the strongest cases have in common
The cases worth spending time on share three features. The sensor was operated by trained personnel doing an unrelated job. The recording exists and its provenance is established. And the behaviour recorded is difficult to produce with known objects under the observed conditions.
Shag Harbour in 1967 has the first and third but predates useful recording. Aguadilla in 2013 has all three, with the caveat that a conventional explanation has been argued in detail and not conclusively refuted. The Omaha footage has the first two and is contested on the third — the object may not have entered the water at all.

What we are doing with the section
Each case gets its own page, built the same way: what is documented, what was claimed, what was added later, and what is genuinely unresolved. Where the answer is boring, we publish the boring answer — the Baltic anomaly is a glacial deposit and Bimini Road is beachrock, and both stories are more interesting once you know that.
The remaining unexplained cases are then worth something, because they are not sitting in a pile with everything else.

Nothing we can find meets that description with an established chain of custody. It is the single clearest gap in the subject.

Sonar signatures reveal sensor capability, which is among the most closely held information any navy has. That is a mundane explanation for an absence often read as suppression.
