The Baltic Sea Anomaly: what the geologists found
A sonar image from 2011 that looked like a crashed spacecraft on the seabed. It was examined by geologists, who reached an answer. The answer is worth knowing, and so is why the image looked the way it did.

In June 2011 a Swedish salvage team, Ocean X, sweeping the northern Baltic for shipwrecks, recorded a side-scan sonar image of something on the seabed about ninety metres down. It appeared circular, roughly sixty metres across, with what looked like a track running away from it — the shape people immediately compared to a crashed craft.
What is documented
The sonar image is real and the team’s subsequent dives happened. Samples were recovered from the formation and examined by academic geologists, including at Stockholm University.
The finding was that the material is consistent with rock deposited by glacial action — the kind of debris a retreating ice sheet drops as it melts, common across the Baltic basin, which was under ice within the last twelve thousand years.
What was claimed
The salvage team reported effects during their dives that received a great deal of coverage — electrical equipment failing near the object, and an appearance up close they described as unnatural. Media treatment ran from crashed UFO to Nazi anti-submarine installation to a lost civilisation.
It is worth being straightforward: the team stood to benefit from attention, and the case has been used commercially. That does not make the sonar image fake. It does mean the surrounding claims need weighing accordingly.
Why the image looked like that
This is the part worth taking away, because it applies to every seabed anomaly story. A side-scan sonar image is not a photograph. It is a map of returned sound intensity, painted as the towfish moves, with shadow where sound did not return.
Sound speed varies with water temperature and salinity. Tow speed varies. The result is an image that stretches, compresses and produces hard-edged geometry from soft-edged objects. Straight lines and circles in side-scan data are frequently artefacts of the method, and any surveyor will tell you so.
What remains unexplained
Very little, honestly. A glacial deposit in a glacial seabed, imaged with a method known to produce geometric artefacts, is a complete explanation of the available evidence.
What is unresolved is narrower and not very mysterious: the formation has never been surveyed comprehensively by an independent scientific expedition, so its full shape is not documented to the standard the claims would require. That is a gap in the record, not a gap in the explanation.

Has any independent scientific survey of the site been published?
The geological sampling addressed material, not morphology. A full multibeam survey would close the file properly and does not appear to exist.
