The ganzfeld experiments: the best case for psi, and its problem
Halved ping-pong balls over the eyes, red light, white noise, and a target in another room. It is the most replicated protocol in parapsychology and the meta-analyses of it point in opposite directions.

If there is a strongest case for psi, it is the ganzfeld. The protocol is simple: a receiver sits in a room with halved ping-pong balls over the eyes under red light, hearing white noise, in a state of mild sensory uniformity. In another room a sender views a randomly selected target. Afterwards the receiver is shown four images and picks which one the sender saw.
Chance is twenty-five per cent. The question is whether the observed rate is reliably higher.
What is documented
A large body of studies going back to the 1970s, most associated initially with Charles Honorton. The protocol was refined specifically in response to criticism — the automated "autoganzfeld" removed human involvement from target selection and judging, addressing the two most obvious loopholes.
In 1986 Honorton and the sceptic Ray Hyman published a joint communiqué agreeing on what the methodological standards should be. That is a genuinely unusual event in this field: the leading proponent and the leading critic agreeing in advance on what would count.
The duelling meta-analyses
In 1994 Bem and Honorton published an analysis in Psychological Bulletin reporting a significant effect across autoganzfeld studies.
In 1999 Milton and Wiseman published an analysis of subsequent studies and found no significant effect. Later meta-analyses by other authors, using different inclusion criteria and different date ranges, have again found significant effects.
All of these are peer-reviewed. They disagree. The disagreement turns substantially on which studies are included, which is exactly the point at which meta-analysis stops being arithmetic and starts being judgement.
What would settle it
A large, pre-registered, multi-site replication with the analysis plan published in advance and all results reported regardless of outcome. This is now standard practice in psychology after its own replication crisis, and it is precisely the design that has never been run at scale here.
That is a genuinely odd absence. It is not expensive, it is not technically difficult, and both sides say they would accept the result.
